Writer, speaker and teacher. I write about surviving life after loss.
When I was 16 I watched the murder of my father unfold on the 5:00 news in my home town of Puyallup, Washington. Life as I knew it for my younger brother and disabled mother was shattered. I lived in foster care, with family and friends, my mother went into state care. It felt like an atomic bomb was dropped on my family that day.
As the years passed I began picking up the pieces of my life. Murder trials, death row sentence for my fathers killer. Six years later my my mother was dead. I was 22 parentless and dealing with compound grief. There is no roadmap to grief and loss. Finding your new normal after the bottom falls out.
After many years of surviving life after loss I began to realize that so many of us have a story. Often the things that happen to us during early childhood, especially trauma do not have to define us.
I began writing my life. I have not stopped writing. I find it cathartic and healing, it reprograms my trauma. I believe that creating new experiences, serving others helps us find our way to healing our life. Finding our new normal after loss. Even with all the work I have done I still miss my mom and dad. I think of them so often. I have found ways to honor their memory but the truth is there are days I still feel this loss. When you lose someone you know this. It is a loss that is forever.
I help people write through their trauma and discover their voice. Leading them through taking back their story. I am available to teach writing sessions if you are beginning your book, to speak at your event about resilience and the power of story. I would love to connect with you.
